12. the fang, the fang, the golden tooth (2:25) the moon shines from a distance it’s desolate rock when yer on top the lights color the earth but i’m burning up when i get too close to the sun ø the fang the fang the poison tooth i’d stick my head inside for you and i’d lift anyone to the sunrays first a way of giving my friends a worse sunburn ø and i won’t tuck you in when I’m so tuckered out ø ø so i’ll light this darkened room with a flashlight and you see that this lamp is not the sun and it can never be and half the words we write are the ones we thought we’d thought but the sentences we need the most stay fragments scraps lines and dots ø and i won’t be suckered in so i’m just shutting down ø ø the sunlight grabs my eyelids tugging them open as my dreams fight to keep them closed and that means it’s over for tonight so i’ll let the dream spill out and i recount it twice next time a detail fades away smile ok nod yr head pleasant nice ø but i’m not shutting up unless you switch me off ø ø the fang the fang the golden tooth i’d press my hand on it for you and i’d hope the antidote was near but you’d be the one to live with that new fear ø swan swan carcrash guts in the bottom of a bucket of capital Rs the trees sprout horseheads at noon while the waitress serves us buckets of tar ø umbrellas umbrellas umbrellas umbrellas ø

(1:55) we left the lure inside the fish’s mouth and all went off to sleep and dreamed the dreams of cloudy heads and smallmouthed kids with shiny teeth ø the scales would not wash off the fish would not be lost our hands are drying off ø yr dad’s electric motor started sputtered and soon it was dead ø did he not plug it in all night? do salty worms live in his head? do purple worms fit in a can that fits within his brain pain? did our lines get tangled? will you give me a hand man? Ø (there’s too much work to do ø but what about the rest of us?) ø ø the lines go from our windows cross the lake into the fishes’ mouths every house has got one and the strings all cross at right angles ø can you feel ‘er tugger on yr shutters little feller? feller can you tugger on yr shutters little brother? we found the lure afloat within the hidden cove of cattail groves so tie another on we hear the fish’s song and start to row ø the fish would not be lost but all was not for naught ø
